ESG Disclosure Data Rooms in the EU
EU ESG disclosure requirements have created a new VDR use case. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), in force from 2024, requires large EU companies to publish detailed sustainability reports under the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), with limited assurance from independent auditors. The EU Taxonomy regulation and SFDR add further reporting layers for asset managers.
ESG VDRs serve three functions: (1) collecting ESG data from across the company and its supply chain into a single audit-ready repository, (2) exposing this data to assurance providers, and (3) maintaining the historical archive needed to defend disclosed metrics over time.
This page covers how to structure an ESG VDR and the providers typically used.

EU ESG Disclosure Framework
- CSRD (Directive 2022/2464/EU). Phased application from 2024–2028; double-materiality assessment.
- ESRS — twelve standards covering general, environmental, social, governance topics.
- EU Taxonomy (Regulation 2020/852). Classification of environmentally sustainable activities.
- SFDR (Regulation 2019/2088). Sustainability disclosure for financial services.
- CSDDD (Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive). Supply-chain due diligence — phased in from 2027.
ESG VDR Structure

Frequently Asked Questions
Is CSRD live for 2026 reporting?
Yes — CSRD applies in phased waves. Wave 1 (large companies already subject to NFRD) applies from FY2024 (reports in 2025); Wave 2 (other large companies) from FY2025 (reports in 2026).
Do VDRs help with CSRD assurance?
Yes — assurance providers typically request a VDR-style audit-evidence room with source data, calculation steps, and methodology documentation. The VDR provides the granular access controls and audit trail assurance providers expect.
